March 2024

This month I will be reading A Woman is No Man by Etaf Rum. March marks 5 years since this incredible novel was published. I read it a few years ago and loved it. I’m looking forward to writing a review and sharing this story with you.

From a refugee camp near Ramallah to a Brooklyn rowhouse, “A Woman Is No Man” follows three generations of Palestinian women as they confront the claustrophobic expectations that continue to shape their lives. In the spring of 1990, Isra Hadid accepts a marriage proposal that will take her to America, her heart full of fairy-tale hopes. Eighteen years later, her eldest daughter, Deya Ra’ad, longs for college but reluctantly considers potential husbands at the urging of her grandmother Fareeda. When an anonymous note lures Deya to a Manhattan bookshop, the story she knows about her family is violently rewritten.

About the Founder

Georgia Bridgett is a University of Liverpool BA (Hons) English graduate (specialising in Literature). In 2020 Georgia completed an MA in Social History of Art at the University of Leeds. Her dissertation explored Ariella Azoulay’s theory of ‘watching’ photographs to further understand how citizens engage with photographs of Syrian refugees in the media.

Throughout and alongside her Master’s degree, Georgia has developed a deep interest in Middle Eastern history, culture and politics. She is also interested in relations between the Middle East and the West, and is passionate about challenging common stereotypes and misconceptions about the MENA region. This led her to intern for two months with Pink Jinn and create MENAb00ks. Georgia has also written for charities. MENAb00ks is where Georgia explores her passion for literature about the MENA region. Her personal blog on https://georgiabridgett.com/ is where you will find book reviews with a focus on humanitarian literature as well as women’s writing from around the world.
